KCNQ1

Associated conditions:

  • Arrhythmia

KCNQ1 makes part of a potassium channel that lets the heart reset its electrical charge after each beat. Genetic changes in this gene slow that reset and are associated with an autosomal dominant condition called type 1 long QT syndrome, which can trigger fainting or sudden cardiac arrest. Knowing your genetic status enables avoiding certain drugs and taking beta-blockers that greatly reduce the danger.

Arrhythmia

An arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm. Inherited forms can cause fast, irregular or dangerous rhythms and, rarely, sudden collapse, so carriers benefit from heart-rhythm testing, sometimes medication, and avoiding specific triggers.
