KCNE1
Associated conditions:
- Arrhythmia
KCNE1 makes a helper subunit for a potassium channel that resets the heart's electrical charge after each beat, and the same channel supports hearing. Genetic changes in this gene delay this reset and are associated with an autosomal dominant contribution to long QT syndrome, or, when both copies are affected, an autosomal recessive form with deafness (Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome). Knowing your genetic status enables spotting rhythm risk and avoiding triggering medications.

Arrhythmia
An arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm. Inherited forms can cause fast, irregular or dangerous rhythms and, rarely, sudden collapse, so carriers benefit from heart-rhythm testing, sometimes medication, and avoiding specific triggers.
