BAG3
Associated conditions:
- Aortopathy
- Arrhythmia
BAG3 is a quality-control helper that clears out damaged proteins and keeps heart muscle cells resilient under stress. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant risk of dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure, by letting faulty proteins accumulate and weaken the heart. Knowing your genetic status enables early cardiac monitoring and treatment that can protect heart function.
Conditions linked to BAG3
Aortopathy
Aortopathy refers to weakening or widening (aneurysm) of the aorta, the body’s main artery. Inherited forms can lead to dangerous enlargement or tearing, so carriers are monitored with regular imaging and blood-pressure control, with surgery considered before the aorta reaches a risky size.
Arrhythmia
An arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm. Inherited forms can cause fast, irregular or dangerous rhythms and, rarely, sudden collapse, so carriers benefit from heart-rhythm testing, sometimes medication, and avoiding specific triggers.
