HCN4

Associated conditions:

  • Arrhythmia

HCN4 forms the pacemaker channel that generates the heart's natural electrical rhythm in the sinus node. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant risk of sinus node dysfunction and atrial fibrillation, by slowing the heartbeat. Knowing your genetic status enables monitoring and, when needed, a pacemaker.

Arrhythmia

An arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm. Inherited forms can cause fast, irregular or dangerous rhythms and, rarely, sudden collapse, so carriers benefit from heart-rhythm testing, sometimes medication, and avoiding specific triggers.
