SUFU keeps the Hedgehog growth pathway switched off, restraining cell multiplication in the developing brain and skin. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant raised risk of childhood medulloblastoma and Gorlin syndrome features such as skin cancers. Knowing your genetic status enables early imaging and skin surveillance.
