PRKG1
Associated conditions:
- Aortopathy
PRKG1 makes an enzyme that signals the smooth muscle in artery walls to relax. Genetic changes in this gene leave the enzyme stuck on and are associated with an autosomal dominant weakening of the aorta, which can lead to aneurysm and dissection at a young age. Knowing your genetic status enables aortic imaging and blood pressure control that are protective.
Conditions linked to PRKG1
Aortopathy
Aortopathy refers to weakening or widening (aneurysm) of the aorta, the body’s main artery. Inherited forms can lead to dangerous enlargement or tearing, so carriers are monitored with regular imaging and blood-pressure control, with surgery considered before the aorta reaches a risky size.
