APOB
Associated conditions:
- Hypercholesterolaemia
APOB makes apolipoprotein B, the protein that lets LDL cholesterol particles dock onto liver receptors and be cleared from the blood. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant condition called familial hypercholesterolaemia and early heart disease, by leaving cholesterol stuck in circulation. Knowing your genetic status enables treatment with statins and lifestyle changes that respond well.
Conditions linked to APOB
Hypercholesterolaemia
Familial hypercholesterolaemia causes very high LDL (harmful) cholesterol from birth, raising the risk of early heart disease. It is highly treatable with cholesterol-lowering medication and lifestyle steps, so early diagnosis is protective.
