KIT
Associated conditions:
- Gastrointestinal stromal tumours
KIT is a cell-surface receptor that switches on growth signals when it binds its partner protein, driving the multiplication of specialised gut, blood and pigment cells. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant condition called familial gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) and related growths, caused by faults that leave the receptor permanently switched on. Knowing your genetic status enables regular surveillance.
