TFR2

Associated conditions:

  • Haemochromatosis type 3

TFR2 makes transferrin receptor 2, an iron sensor in the liver that helps regulate the hormone hepcidin controlling iron absorption. Genetic changes in both copies of this gene are associated with an autosomal recessive condition called type 3 haemochromatosis, an iron-overload condition that appears earlier than the common type and can harm the liver and other organs. Knowing your genetic status enables early detection and simple treatment that keeps iron in check.

Haemochromatosis type 3

Haemochromatosis causes the body to absorb and store too much iron, which can gradually build up and damage the liver, heart, pancreas and joints. It is straightforward to manage: regular blood removal (venesection) keeps iron levels safe, so early awareness prevents harm.
