HAMP

Associated conditions:

  • Haemochromatosis type 2

HAMP makes hepcidin, the master hormone that regulates how much iron the body absorbs and releases. Genetic changes in both copies of this gene are associated with an autosomal recessive, severe early-onset (juvenile) haemochromatosis that damages the heart, liver and glands. Knowing your genetic status enables early diagnosis, so iron removal treatment can prevent lasting organ damage.

Haemochromatosis type 2

Haemochromatosis causes the body to absorb and store too much iron, which can gradually build up and damage the liver, heart, pancreas and joints. It is straightforward to manage: regular blood removal (venesection) keeps iron levels safe, so early awareness prevents harm.
