HFE

Associated conditions:

  • Haemochromatosis

HFE makes a protein that helps the body sense iron and produce hepcidin, the hormone that limits iron absorption. Genetic changes in this gene, especially the common C282Y variant in two copies, are associated with an autosomal recessive condition called hereditary haemochromatosis, letting iron build up and damage the liver, heart, and pancreas. Knowing your genetic status enables simple blood tests and blood donation that can prevent this.

Conditions linked to HFE

Haemochromatosis

Haemochromatosis causes the body to absorb and store too much iron, which can gradually build up and damage the liver, heart, pancreas and joints. It is straightforward to manage: regular blood removal (venesection) keeps iron levels safe, so early awareness prevents harm.
