VCL

Associated conditions:

  • Cardiomyopathy

VCL makes vinculin and its heart-specific form metavinculin, anchoring proteins that hold muscle cells together and link them to their internal scaffolding. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant risk of dilated cardiomyopathy, in which the heart enlarges and pumps weakly. Knowing your genetic status enables treatment before heart failure develops.

Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is disease of the heart muscle that can make it thickened, enlarged or weakened. Inherited forms can affect the heart’s pumping or rhythm, so carriers are monitored with heart scans and ECGs and treated early to protect heart function.
