DMD

Associated conditions:

  • Cardiomyopathy

DMD makes dystrophin, a protein that cushions and stabilises muscle fibres, including heart muscle, during contraction. Genetic changes in this X-linked gene are associated with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy and can weaken the heart into dilated cardiomyopathy. Knowing your genetic status enables early cardiac screening and treatment.

Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is disease of the heart muscle that can make it thickened, enlarged or weakened. Inherited forms can affect the heart’s pumping or rhythm, so carriers are monitored with heart scans and ECGs and treated early to protect heart function.
