FHL1

Associated conditions:

  • Cardiomyopathy

FHL1 makes a scaffolding protein that helps build muscle fibres and sense the mechanical strain on heart and skeletal muscle. Genetic changes in this X-linked gene are associated with muscle-wasting myopathies often paired with cardiomyopathy. Knowing your genetic status enables heart monitoring, since the heart can be affected even when muscle weakness seems mild.

Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is disease of the heart muscle that can make it thickened, enlarged or weakened. Inherited forms can affect the heart’s pumping or rhythm, so carriers are monitored with heart scans and ECGs and treated early to protect heart function.
