TTR

Associated conditions:

  • TTR-cardiomyopathy

TTR makes transthyretin, a protein that carries thyroid hormone and vitamin A in the blood. Genetic changes in this gene make it unstable so it misfolds and deposits as amyloid, and are associated with an autosomal dominant condition called hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis that damages the heart and peripheral nerves. Knowing your genetic status enables early diagnosis, since effective stabilising and gene-silencing treatments now exist.

Conditions linked to TTR

TTR-cardiomyopathy

Transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis causes an abnormal protein to build up in the heart and nerves, stiffening the heart muscle. It is increasingly treatable, so recognising it early, and testing relatives, opens up therapy that can slow it.
