MYH7

Associated conditions:

  • Cardiomyopathy

MYH7 makes beta-myosin heavy chain, the motor protein that drives each heart-muscle contraction. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant condition and are one of the most common causes of inherited hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy, in which the heart muscle thickens or weakens and can cause dangerous rhythms. Knowing your genetic status enables heart imaging and rhythm monitoring.

Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is disease of the heart muscle that can make it thickened, enlarged or weakened. Inherited forms can affect the heart’s pumping or rhythm, so carriers are monitored with heart scans and ECGs and treated early to protect heart function.
