RNF43 makes a protein that dampens Wnt growth signaling by tagging its receptors for disposal, keeping the bowel lining from over-growing. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant form of polyposis featuring serrated polyps that can progress to bowel cancer. Knowing your genetic status enables surveillance and polyp removal.
