GCH1
Associated conditions:
- Dystonia
GCH1 makes an enzyme needed to produce a helper molecule for building dopamine, the brain chemical that controls movement. Genetic changes in this gene are associated with an autosomal dominant condition called dopa-responsive dystonia, with childhood-onset stiffness and abnormal walking. Knowing your genetic status enables treatment, since symptoms usually respond dramatically and lastingly to small doses of levodopa.
Conditions linked to GCH1
Dystonia
Dystonia is a movement disorder in which muscles contract involuntarily, causing twisting or repetitive movements and abnormal postures. Some inherited forms respond very well to specific medication, so an accurate diagnosis guides effective treatment.
