Pre-pregnancy carrier test
“We did genetic testing before we conceived, and I want to explain why & how…Firstly, it’s important to note that 90% of children born with a genetic condition have no family history of it.
Everyone carries variants in their genes, this is normal and if we are a ‘carrier’ this doesn’t affect our individual health (but you won’t know until you have tested). If you and your partner are both ‘carriers' of a condition, there is a 1 in 4 chance your baby will be affected by this condition.
Carrier screening is so simple Eugene sends you a testing kit, you & your partner do a saliva sample, and sent it back. The DNA from saliva is analysed. You then meet with a genetic counsellor who runs through both of your results, what it means if there are any risks and the next steps.“
