Sialic acid storage diseases are a group of conditions which affect structures in cells known as lysosomes, which help break down other molecules in the body. People affected by sialic acid storage disease have trouble transporting sialic acid out of the lysosomes.
The severity of symptoms and age of onset of sialic acid storage diseases are variable. Symptoms can include buildup of fluid in the body, low muscle tone and balance problems, developmental delay, seizures or an enlarged liver, spleen or heart. The most severe form of sialic acid storage disease is infantile free silaic acid storage disease (ISSD). Children with ISSD present with symptoms in utero or at birth. Sadly, these children often don't survive into adulthood. The milder form of sialic acid storage disease is Salla disease. Children with Salla disease show symptoms in the first year of life or even later and usually have a normal life expectancy. Treatment is focussed on managing symptoms.

If the other parent also happens to be a carrier of the same gene, there is a 25% (1 in 4) chance that they both pass this gene variation on to their child — and as such, have a child affected by the disease.
