Comprehensive carrier screening is an at-home genetic test that checks to see if you have a higher chance of having a baby with a serious inherited genetic disease. It tests for 550 genetic diseases that can affect children, including cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, Tay-Sachs Disease, and fragile X syndrome.

This test is available to donor recipients who are City Fertility clients. It includes individual carrier screening and a comparison of your result with your donor’s carrier screening result.

Comprehensive Carrier Screening with City Fertility is our test designed for donor recipients under the care of City Fertility who want to get a thorough understanding of their risk of having a child with a serious genetic condition when using a particular donor.

It’s the best option for those who want to know their individual carrier status and want to do everything they can to understand their risk of passing a genetic disease to their child.

What genes are screened?

Comprehensive Carrier screens for 550 inherited genetic diseases that affect children in Australia including:

CFTR — Cystic Fibrosis (CF)
SMN1 — Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
FMR1 — FragileX Syndrome
HEXA— Tay Sachs Disease
HBA1/HBA2 — Alpha-thalassemia

It also screens for some gene variants that aren’t covered in our other tests such as hearing and vision loss conditions, or the GBA gene associated with Gauchers disease, which is common in the Ashkenazi Jewish population.

What can I do with the carrier test results?

Your carrier testing results help you understand your chance of having a child with a serious inherited genetic condition. As part of this package, one of our genetic counsellors will meet with you to discuss:

Whether or not your donor carries the same condition(s) as you and if you have an increased risk of having a child affected with a condition with your donor.
What genes you and your donor have been screened for.
What your options are depending on the above, including continuing with the selected donor or selecting a different donor.
If you and your chosen donor are carriers of the same condition, you may be advised to select a new donor to reduce this risk of having a child with a serious genetic condition.

What’s included with the test?

Each test includes your individual carrier test, a lab report and a Eugene clinical report of your individual carrier status. To empower you to continue on your IVF journey with knowledge and confidence we also include a genetic counselling consult and a report to match your carrier result with the result of your chosen donor.

If you change your donor at any point, we provide a new report to match your carrier test result with your new donor’s result for an additional fee of $195. To support you, we include another genetic counselling consult with this new report.

About the lab

Your sample is processed at our international medical laboratory that is CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) and CAP (College of American Pathology) certified.

This means they meet high standards to obtain national certifications and submit themselves to regular inspections. It also means your results can be used to guide your pregnancy plans and be directly actioned at your doctor's office.

Your saliva sample is destroyed after 30 days. In unusual cases when testing takes longer than 30 days, the specimen will be retained until the report is delivered.

From the moment we receive your saliva sample, the turnaround time to get your results are 4 to 6 weeks.
